Funeral Mass will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, January 23 at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church, Balta, ND. Visitation will be Sunday from 4 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. with a rosary and prayer service beginning at 7:30 p.m. at Hertz Funeral Home, Harvey, ND. Burial will be in the church cemetery in the spring. Magdalene “Lena” Axtmann was born on January 21, 1923 in Rugby, ND. She was the daughter of Frank J and Magdelena (Bohl) Axtmann. She grew up near Balta and graduated from high school there in 1941. Lena married John A. Mack on June 7, 1943 in Balta. They lived and farmed east of Balta where ten children were born to this union. She cared for the children and helped with the chores. She grew a large garden and with its bountiful harvests provided for the large family. She and John worked hard but found time to enjoy church and community functions in the area. Lena also worked at the Rugby Greenhouse. They moved to Harvey in 2005. John died on September 25, 2010. Lena enjoyed dancing; sewing; playing …
