Brunswick veterans program holds benefit concert

Building Veterans, a Brunswick-based recovery program for returned service members and their adult children, helped Jerry Simons escape from a decades-long cycle of heroin addiction and incarceration. To thank the organization, Simons organized a benefit concert on its behalf, which was held on Sunday at the Fraternal Order of Eagles clubhouse in Brunswick.Proceeds from the concert will go toward the renovation of a new eight-bed recovery home in Brunswick, said Bob Wyatt, the founder of Building Veterans.The nonprofit already runs one group home, which houses 10 men, and hopes to build a third house in the next few years.“We’ve helped at least 25 people in the last two years,” said Wyatt. “Our sister organization in Branson, Missouri, is 15 years old and helps 300 people, so we’re expecting to be able to grow like that.”Simons, who now works as a kitchen manager for the Eagles club, was inspired by his own musical background to organize the benefit concert.
