Buckley, Missouri men’s golf close out regular season on top at Tiger Invitational
BRANSON MO NEWS: Hayden Buckley stoically knelt to the ground and reached into the 18th hole. He rose and removed his hat — showing off his perfect hat hair 27 holes in the making. In the midst of the applause that surrounded the green, Buckley shook the hands of coaches, opposing players and local supporters.He finally cracked a smile as people congratulated him for winning his fourth individual title of the year. Standing between coaches Mark Leroux and Grant Milner, he proudly held his trophy and posed for pictures with his teammates as the sun hung low in the sky. The senior reveled in his last time teeing off at the Old Hawthorne as a Tiger and the sun beginning to set on his collegiate career. Never mind that his final regular-season hole ended in a bogey.“It was almost a little sad,” Buckley said.
Tuesday evening, Buckley was crowned champion of the Tiger Invitational at The Club Old Hawthorn. The senior set a new invitational individual record by four strokes with a 12-under-par 204. His Tigers captured the overall team trophy with a 25 under par performance, 11 strokes ahead of second-place Kansas State.The team had four top-10 finishers: Jamie Stewart tied for second at 7 under par, and freshman Jack Parker, a Tolton graduate, and senior Trevor Ullestad tied for ninth at 3 under par.But it was Buckley’s invitational from the jump. The senior started the competition in scintillating form and carded a 65 in Monday’s Round 1. His 18th-hole eagle came in at No. 6 on SportsCenter’s daily Top 10.After the fast start, though, he cooled off in the later rounds and posted a 69 in Round 2 and entered the 18th at 3 under par in Tuesday’s final round.“I walked up and just looked around me on the 18th hole.
