Chargers handle Dordt, await M’side

BRANSON MO NEWS: SIOUX CITY | With a repeat regular season title already in tow, Briar Cliff has assured itself a berth in the NAIA Division II national tournament. The Chargers, though, would prefer to add the GPAC tournament title to their resume before heading to Branson, Missouri, in a couple weeks.Briar Cliff took the first step Wednesday, rolling to a 96-79 win over Dordt in a conference tournament quarterfinal at the Newman Flanagan Center. Its 11th consecutive triumph set up a semifinal clash with Morningside on Saturday as the Mustangs surprised Midland 100-90 at Midland Wednesday night.BCU beat Dordt for the third time this season, pulling away with a 21-4 surge in the final six minutes of the first half. The Chargers clung to a 35-30 lead with six minutes remaining.
“I thought we executed pretty well offensively, we didn’t really have very good defensive intensity the first 10 minutes of the game but after that the guys played much better defensively,” Briar Cliff Coach Nic Nelson said. “I think we gave up four points the last six minutes of the first half and that’s where we sort of built that lead.
