Date, topics set for 2018 water conference

The Tri-State Water Resource Coalition, of which Joplin is a member, has settled on a date and the topics for its 2018 water conference.The event, held each year in Springfield, focuses on various water-related issues such as drought, supply, water quality and infrastructure. The nonprofit coalition was formed in 2003 with the goal of finding and securing reliable water supplies in the Ozarks.This year’s conference will begin at 9 a.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 30, at the Darr Agricultural Center on the campus of Missouri State University in Springfield.
Topics for the 2018 conference include drought across the country, regional water supplies and tactics for encouraging conservation.Gail Melgren, coalition executive director, said additional supply for the area, and Joplin in particular, is needed. At last year’s event, Melgren said the coalition believed an answer to its request for a water supply allocation out of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Stockton Lake could come by the end of 2018.”We continue to work collaboratively with the Corps of Engineers, the Missouri Department of Natural Resources, private engineering firms, and regional communities,” Melgren said Friday. “We have completed a big stack of required engineering reports and are in the home stretch of our Stockton Lake reallocation request. Bottom line, the data shows a need for more water supply in the future. We are determined to acquire additional water and deliver it to people and businesses in the region who need it.”
Studies the coalition has conducted over the years have led to a consensus that projected population growth and any prolonged drought could lead to a need for new water sources, possibly less than 15 years from now.
