Dought, population growth could strain water sources in Southwest Missouri

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — Roddy Rogers said that when he and other family members learned that a relative had a brain tumor, no thought was given to the financial cost of having it surgically removed. That’s not because cost was not an issue for the family, Rogers said, but because it was what had to be done to save a life.That same attitude — a willingness to do whatever is necessary — is one Southwest Missouri residents need to have to confront a possible water shortage in the region in the coming decades, said Rogers, manager of water resources projects at City Utilities in Springfield. He was one of the speakers this past week at the Tri-State Water Resource Coalition’s annual conference.The coalition is a nonprofit that was formed in 2003 with the goal of finding and securing reliable water supplies in the Ozarks. Some of the communities and groups represented in the coalition are Joplin, Carthage, Lamar, Webb City, Branson and Springfield, as well as Jasper County, Greene County and Missouri American Water Co., which provides water to Joplin and some of the surrounding area.
