Back: coaches Tom Morrell, Gary Mosher, Josh Palmer.(Photo: Provided Photo)Elmira Cal Ripken’s 12-under all-star team made history with its title at the Cal Ripken Western New York State Championship tournament at Shoshone Park in Buffalo.The championship was the first for the team under 50/70 regulations, where the pitcher’s mound is 50 feet away and bases are 70 feet away. West Elmira previously won three 12-under state titles in 46/60 competition.Elmira went 5-0 in the eight-team tournament and allowed just 14 total runs. That included a 12-2 win over Eden in the title game, which was called after four innings because of the 10-run rule.The championship sends Elmira to the Mid Atlantic Cal Ripken Regional Championships in Mount Olive, New Jersey. That 10-team tournament begins July 18 and also includes champions from Southeast Pennsylvania, Northwest Pennsylvania, Northern New York, Southern New York, Delaware, Maryland, Northern New Jersey, Southern New Jersey and Mount Olive.The regional champion will play in the 12U 50/70 Cal Ripken World Series, scheduled for Aug. 3-11 in Branson, Missouri.”This group of kids have been playing together since the age of eight years old for the most part and they have put a significant amount of time into this; from fall ball, to winter workouts, to travel ball and to our house league over the last several years to earn the …
