Fate of former racetrack site still undecided

BRANSON MO NEWS: A man who purchased property that once was intended to be a NASCAR-style racetrack said he still does not have plans for it, but he has not yet ruled out the racetrack.

Ed Mareth, owner of Mareth Enterprises in Purdy, purchased the land south of Hollister about a year and a half ago at a foreclosure sale. He said he is still figuring out what would be the best use for the land.

“We’re exploring a lot of options, including selling the property or future development,” Mareth said.

Former owner Russell Cook began work on the property, located just east of the intersection of U.S. 65 and Missouri 86, but the project eventually stalled. Eventually, Cook was accused by the Missouri Department of Natural Resources of several land-disturbance violations.

Mareth said he has taken care of the problems cited by DNR.

“We worked closely with DNR to make sure we secured the site,” Mareth said. “We did it in just a few months. DNR was very cooperative.”

Mareth said securing the property to DNR’s satisfaction was the No. 1 priority.

“We want to be good stewards,” he said.
