Fishing camps and free fishing weekend coming up
BRANSON MO NEWS: In the rush-rush lifestyle, many parents’ good intentions to take their children fishing often remains in dry dock.That’s too bad because although the world of family life is ever changing, the benefits of getting kids involved in fishing are the same as they’ve always been. Fishing is still a good way to connect children with the outdoors, it’s still a good way to get them off the couch and involved in a healthier lifestyle, and it’s still a good way to create or strengthen family bonds.These benefits are the reasons the Missouri Department of Conservation is interested in getting people involved in its Discover Nature Fishing Program. This statewide program provides a series of lessons to help kids and families gain skills and confidence to go fishing. All classes are free. They are for youths ages 7 to 15, but the focus isn’t solely on kids. To be eligible to participate, youths must be accompanied by an adult, or people can register and participate as entire families.
Registration is currently under way for MDC’s Discover Nature Fishing Camp in June and July at the Springfield-Greene County Park Board’s Rutledge-Wilson Farm Community Park at 3825 W. Farm Road 146 in Springfield. This event is structured as four three-hour classes that will take place June 18, June 23, July 14 and July 21. The topics for these classes include the following:• Class 1: June 16 — Equipment, casting, proper fish handling.• Class 2: June 23 — How to tie a knot and bait a hook.
• Class 3: July 14 — Five common Missouri fish, their anatomy, habitats and lifestyles.• Class 4: July 21 — Fishing with lures, fishing regulations.People can register at mdc-event-web.s3licensing.com/Event/EventDetails/155641.
