Former band director in federal prison

The Missouri arrest of a former Harrison School assistant band director on rape and sodomy charges was the second top story of 2016, especially after federal authorities also charged him and he was sentenced to federal prison.

According to a Harrison Police report, police were notified by the Crimes Against Children Unit on Aug. 21, 2015, that 29-year-old Kyle Smith, then an assistant band director who lived near Branson, Missouri, at the time, had been having sex with a student.

The report said Detective Jason Causey went to the school and spoke with Superintendent Melinda “Mendy” Moss and legal representative, Cody Kees. Causey also spoke with the teacher who received the original allegations and had called the CACU on Aug. 20.

Records show Kees had been called to investigate the allegation after the CACU was notified. Harrison authorities weren’t able to collect enough evidence to support local charges at the time, they said.

However, Taney County (Missouri) authorities did arrest Smith on suspicion of rape and sodomy charges because they alleged sexual encounters with two female students from Harrison had taken place at his Missouri residence.
