Georgia run defense bounces back in win over Tennessee
BRANSON MO NEWS: If there was any way to respond to a lackluster performance against Missouri, the Georgia run defense did it on Saturday.Georgia’s defensive front dominated the Tennessee Volunteers in Sanford Stadium, allowing just 66 rushing yards to the Tennessee offense.Last week against Missouri, the Georgia defense allowed Missouri to score 29 points, including 172 rushing yards on 37 attempts. The Tigers also scored four touchdowns on the ground. That performance came against a Missouri offense known more for its passing game than its running game. Going into the game last Saturday, Missouri averaged just 200 rushing yards per game compared to 389 receiving yards per game.
Against a run-heavy Tennessee offense, though, the Georgia run defense looked dominant again, just as it had in the first three games of the season against Austin Peay, South Carolina and Middle Tennessee.Going into Saturday’s game, the Volunteers averaged 205 rushing yards per game and 4.4 yards per carry. Even in a 47-21 defeat against Florida last week, they tallied 156 rushing yards on 54 carries with two rushing touchdowns. On Saturday, Tennessee finished with a season low in rushing yards.“Nobody should be able to run the ball on us,” inside linebacker Monty Rice said. “Just can’t have it, cause when you let somebody run the ball on you, then they never have to throw it. Handing the ball off is like the easiest way to get yards and touchdowns.”Tennessee tallied 66 rushing yards on 25 attempts in the game, as the Georgia defense accumulated five tackles for loss. Both Tennessee touchdowns in the game were passing touchdowns. The improvement of the run defense was thanks to several different contributors, as 12 Georgia defenders recorded at least two tackles in the win.“I am proud of the toughness and the striking and the ability to hold the runners within reason,” …
