GOP candidates make pitch for votes
BRANSON MO NEWS: A pair of statewide GOP candidates made a campaign stop in the Tri-Lakes Area this week.Speaking before a group of friends, family and supporters Wednesday at a “Fire Claire McCaskill Rally,” Courtland Sykes kicked off his campaign for the Republican nomination for United States Senator at Sycamore Creek Family Ranch near Branson.One of 11 Republican candidates vying for a spot on the ticket this August, Sykes, a self-described pro-Trump conservative, said he aligns himself with The Freedom Caucus, a group of the most conservative members of Congress, and is on a mission to cleanse what he sees as the “deep state” at the nation’s capital, in both major political parties.
“Here in Missouri, there’s a difference between Democrats and Republicans; we believe there’s a separate set of values and systems. You go to Washington D.C., there’s no difference between Democrats and Republicans,” Sykes said. “It’s all part of one cabal, one autocratic cabal, with a secret agreement to grow the government and keep driving us crazy.”Sykes began his speech by discussing his endorsement from former Alabama Chief Justus Roy Moore, who was defeated by Democrat Doug Jones in a special election for a U.S. Senate seat in December. In November, before the election, Moore was accused by multiple women of sexual assault, which Sykes said was a tactic to defeat the conservative candidate.“The Democrats saw that as a formula of how they can defeat conservatives,” Sykes said.Sykes, who also endorsed Moore during the special Senate campaign, said the situation is somewhat comparable to current accusations happening around the country.“It’s much like what we’re seeing now with (Donald) Trump, Governor (Eric) Greitens and Matt Bevin, the governor of Kentucky,” he said. “It’s a witch hunt, a …
