House of Representatives seeks to raise minimum marriage age

BRANSON MO NEWS: Missouri is on the path of changing the youngest age someone can get married and one county office is backing that update.

In House Bill No. 270, the minimum age a person can get married would be changed from 15 to 17 years old.

Taney County Recorder of Deeds Bob Dixon said he is in favor of changing the age. He said he doesn’t agree that teenagers 15 or 16 years old can get married.

“It’s become a problem in the state of Missouri,” Dixon said.

That problem, Dixon said, is akin to human trafficking.

“I’m not for human trafficking,” Dixon said. “We in the recorder office, we see situations we don’t necessarily approve of.”

One situation still stands out for Dixon.

“I got disheartened when someone said ‘If she gets married, I don’t have to pay child support any more,’” Dixon said. “They said that right in front of me. It’s horrific.

“I feel very sorry for some of those young people who get trapped in those situations.”

Deputy Recorder Audie Erickson said she not only supports the change, but is even in favor of the age being raised to 18.
