Indictment of Gov. Eric Greitens expected to dominate talk in Missouri House Monday

BRANSON MO NEWS: The talk swirling around Missouri about Gov. Eric Greitens and his indictment on a felony charge is not expected to die down soon.A grand jury in St. Louis indicted Greitens, who is married, for felony invasion of privacy for allegedly taking and transmitting a photo of his partly nude lover in 2015.Greitens, a Republican, has declared his innocence and alleged the indictment is a “misguided political decision” by a “reckless liberal prosecutor.” St. Louis Circuit Attorney Kim Gardner is a Democrat.

Here’s a look at what could happen this week.In Jefferson CityRepublicans who control the House of Representatives are poised to undertake at least two significant tasks related to the Greitens affair when they reconvene at 4 p.m.

The process of deciding whether to impeach scandal-plagued Gov. Eric Greitens will begin as early as Monday in the Missouri House of Representatives.

In the first, they are likely to unveil a resolution calling for an investigation of Greitens, with an eye on determining whether he should be impeached.Secondly, leaders in the House will have to name members to a special committee that would handle the investigation. In all, there are expected to be five lawmakers on the panel — three Republicans and two Democrats.Republican Reps. Jay Barnes of Jefferson City and Robert Cornejo of St. Peters are among those who could be appointed to the committee.Meanwhile, a petition is being circulated by Republicans who want Greitens to resign in order to avoid a drawn-out impeachment process.Among those calling for the governor to step down was Rep. Kevin Corlew, a Kansas City Republican who is running in the 2018 election for a vacant seat in the Senate.
