BRANSON MO NEWS: It’s open season for peaches in North Carolina and local growers are enjoying a good crop of their juicy fruits.North Carolina harvested 1,200 acres of peaches in 2017, contributing nearly $7 million in annual sales. North Carolina is the ninth-ranked producer of peaches in the nation, producing an average of 35 million pounds, or 700,000 bushels, for the fresh market each year.Four months is the average North Carolina peach season, spanning from June to September and peaking in July. North Carolina common peach varieties include Biscoe, Candor, Carolina Belle, Derby and Norman.Read more at http://peaches.ces.ncsu.edu/peaches-statistics/.Millstone Creek of RamseurMillstone Creek Orchards, 506 Parks Crossroads Church Road, Ramseur, has five acres of peaches (900 trees), according to Beverly Mooney. The farm’s peach varieties are White Lady, Flaming Fury, Biscoe, Contender, Autumn Star and Coral Star.Mooney said of this year’s yield: “It should be a good crop. Our White Lady’s will be in the next week and we should continue the harvest for four to six weeks. Our fruit will be a bit smaller this year because we were not able to ‘thin’ (or remove) enough peaches from the tree early so remaining fruit did not size as much as we would wish.”Millstone Creek Orchards is open Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m.-6 p.m., Sundays from 1-5:30 p.m., June to November. Group tours by appointment only — please call ahead.Montgomery CountyGarrett Johnson, owner of Johnson Farms in Candor, said this year’s crop “is good as far as taste. Frost did damage us somewhat and we’re a little short, but we’re picking every day.
