BRANSON, Mo. — One of my favorite fall rituals is a visit to Silver Dollar City.On a crisp autumn day, I relish walking around the 1880s-themed park when it is decked out in pumpkins, scarecrows, mums, cornucopia and other autumn decor.Right now, the National Harvest & Cowboy Festival is going on through Oct. 29. I took my 4-year-old recently, and when we walked through the gates that morning, she excitedly exclaimed, “Mommy, I saw a cowboy!” A minute later, she screamed again: “Mommy, I saw a cowboy!” Needless to say, she was thrilled with all the cowboy encounters throughout the day.
A good place to snag a photo with a cowboy is at the Silver Dollar City Stagecoach on the square, a historic stagecoach with an interesting backstory.The stagecoach was built in 1880 and was part of the Butterfield Overland Stage Company, which carried mail and passengers out West. It was retired from the line in 1905 and purchased by a New England woman. The stagecoach was stored in her barn until 1955, when it purchased and used by a New York theme park.In 1960, the Herschend Family, founders of Silver Dollar City, bought the coach and transformed it into one …
