Lawyer for families suing duck boat companies speaks out
BRANSON MO NEWS: KOAT is digging deeper into a lawsuit against the company that owns and operates the duck boat that sank in a Missouri lake killing 17 people on board. A family from New Mexico was on the boat and survived. Their lawyer said the family escaped with minor injuries, but the emotional toll is something they will continue to fight through.The 58-page lawsuit details what happened when a duck boat sank to the bottom of Table Rock Lake in Branson, Missouri, on July 19. Jeffrey Goodman, with Saltz Mongeluzzi Barrett and Bendesky Law Firm, is representing several of the families who were on the boat.

“The family from New Mexico, who also had family in Texas, we represent eight of those survivors as well as several of the death cases involved from around the country,” said Goodman.The lawsuit is against the company that operates the vessels and the one that designs the boats. Goodman said this is not the first time he’s represented clients against the duck boat industry.”Duck boat cases and more broadly we’ve been involved with since 2010 when there was a duck boat that sank in the Delaware River in Philadelphia,” Goodman said.He said duck boats have been a problem for several decades.This lawsuit mentions five other cases between 1999 and 2015, killing a total of 25 people.”These vessels pose an uncceptable risk to human life,” Goodman said.He said the National Transportation Safety Board said in 2002 the vehicles need to be drastically redesigned, but the duck boat industry made no changes. “The hope is that this lawsuit can finally cause the duck boat industry to step up and realize that if they are not going to make the safety changes, a jury is going to punish them to a point that it will require them to …
