Marty Haggard, the eldest son of the late country music legend Merle Haggard will be performing a tribute to his father Saturday, Feb. 10 at the Fair Theatre in downtown Plainview. The show will begin at 6 p.m. and doors will open at 5 p.m.

Haggard will share songs written and recorded by his father, who passed away April 6, 2016 on his 79th birthday. Haggard will also tell some of the personal stories behind his father’s songs.

In 1979, Marty began touring with his own band, then in 1981 signed with Dimension Records. From 1983 to 1985 he travelled with his father, singing harmony and playing guitar. In 1986, he signed with MTM Records and released Trains Make Me Lonesome, a song which garnered him a nomination as best new male vocalist. In 1995, Marty signed with Critique/BMG.

In 1999, Marty began writing and singing spiritual songs. For 10 years Marty traveled the country playing at churches and other venues proclaiming his love for Jesus.

Marty’s love for his Dad’s music inspired him to begin a project titled A Tribute to Merle Haggard “My Dad”. In 2010, he cut the first album in his tribute consisting of 15 Haggard classics. In 2010 he also began performing a tribute to his dad in Branson, Missouri until 2012. In 2011 he also recorded his second Tribute album to his Dad. Marty has spent the last 8 years performing A Tribute to Merle Haggard “My Dad” all over the United States and Canada plus England, Ireland and Scotland.

“Merle Haggard had an enormous influence on country music,” says Melinda Brown, Plainview Main Street manager and manager of the Fair Theatre. “Having his son Marty perform a tribute with his songs and stories will be a special occasion. We encourage everyone to join us.”
