Missouri baseball outlasts Tennessee in 12 innings

BRANSON MO NEWS: After a 41/2-hour jaunt at Taylor Stadium, the Missouri baseball team got off to the start it wanted for its final Southeastern Conference series.Missouri (33-20, 11-17 SEC) outlasted Tennessee 3-2 in 12 innings Thursday night. The Tigers held the Volunteers (28-26, 11-17) to two runs despite 12 hits.Sophomore left-hander TJ Sikkema allowed just one run in seven innings. Tennessee tied the game with a run against the Tiger bullpen in the eighth.

In the bottom of the 12th, Missouri finally countered with the winning run. Alex Samples’ single up the middle provided the Tigers a walk-off victory.Tigers whiff a lot in winMissouri weathered 21 strikeouts by its hitters as it beat the Volunteers. Tennessee starter Zach Linginfelter fanned 14 Tigers in seven innings. The 21 Ks set a school record for Tennessee pitching.Each Missouri hitter struck out at least once in the game; eight fanned at least twice. Junior Brian Sharp struck out three times, but three different Tigers recorded two hits in the game. Seniors Trey Harris and Brett Bond, two of the three, each had an RBI single.Missouri couldn’t put anything together from Bond’s RBI hit in the sixth until Sharp led off the 12th with a walk. The Tigers had baserunners in the eighth, ninth and 11th, but managed nothing.In the 12th, Sharp traded places with senior Matt Berler at first base on a fielder’s choice. Berler got to second on a balk, then Tennessee intentionally walked Harris. The Volunteers went to Garrett Stallings out of the bullpen with two out.Samples took an 0-1 pitch up the middle for the game-winning single.
