Missouri Secretary of State details new voter ID law

BRANSON MO NEWS: Detailing and answering questions on Missouri’s new photo voter ID law, Missouri Secretary of State John R. Ashcroft reiterated a single sentence during a visit to Branson Wednesday.

“If you’re a registered voter, you can vote,” Ashcroft said to the crowd gathered at the Taneyhills Community Library.

According to Ashcroft, the new law, which went into effect on June 1, didn’t establish a requirement to prove an identity at the polls, but changed which documents are accepted.

“Under Missouri’s prior law … you still had to prove your identity to vote,” Ashcroft said. “This changes those rules.”

According to Ashcroft, voters now have three options for producing identification. The first is showing a government-issued photo ID.

“They want to see that Missouri driver’s license, nondriver’s license, that passport or that military ID,” he said.

For those who don’t have a government-issued photo ID, Ashcroft said there are other options available for securing a ballot on election day.

One alternate option involves providing a non-government form of identification. A voter registration card, ID from a Missouri university, college, vocational or technical school, a utility bill, bank statement, government check, paycheck, or other government document that shows a name and address each qualify.

“You have to sign a statement and you’ll also get a letter from the Secretary of State’s office,” Ashcroft said. “You’re not in trouble, it’s not a bill, it’s an offer of our assistance. When the legislature set up this law they gave the Secretary of State’s office the authority and responsibility of getting government-issued photo IDs to people who don’t have one and would like to have one for the purpose of voting.”
