Mountain of confidence: Traveling day camp comes through Denton County
BRANSON MO NEWS: ROANOKE — Mount Kanakuk can be intimidating. The climbing wall with a zip line attached may only be one story off the ground, but to some campers, it’s Everest.Yet the camp site director, Micah Odom, has been watching nervous kids slowly scale the wall in the Compass Christian Church parking lot all week. After some encouragement, all of them eventually take the leap of faith down the zip line, she said.“The climbing wall is a very tangible example of kids conquering their fears,” Odom said. “One boy wanted to come down on the first day, but he made it all the way to the top this morning.”
The Kanakuk KampOut set up shop in Roanoke this week as it travels across the country putting on week-long day camps for kids ages 5 to 12.The faith-based camp is an offshoot of a larger overnight camp based in Branson, Missouri, that’s been operating for 92 years.Between the inflatable obstacle courses and giant water slides, Kanakuk campers learn about the gospel, make some new friends and step away from the screens.“It’s an opportunity for kids to unplug from the stress of everyday life and plug into a source that’s life-giving, encouraging and adventurous,” Kanakuk executive director Garrett Perkins said. “Every kid needs summer camp.”

Statistics show more kids are getting that camp experience. According to the American Camp Association, 14 million children and adults are attending 14,000 overnight or day camps this year. More than 80 percent of those camps reported stable or increasing enrollment numbers over the last five years. While most campers come from middle-income families, more camps are offering scholarships and financial aid to low-income kids. …
