Musicians Find School ‘Instrumental’ on Cellos to Banjoes

Students transcend from grade schoolers to senior citizens. An assortment of faculty includes a retired high school band director, award-winning bluegrass pickers and the first-chair musician in a symphony orchestra.Enrollees and instructors represent a motley crew at the Jackson County School of Music. “Dean” Laurie Schultis says the conglomeration has one thing in common: Regardless of age or instrument of preference, they all love music.Obviously, so does Schultis.

“Our students have different motivations,” she said prior to teaching a piano lesson to young Zona Drake. “We have kids who are in school and want to perform better in their high school band. We have young kids who may just be learning how to play an instrument, and we have a preacher who wants to sing better at church.”The Roane County resident previously founded the West Virginia Kids on First STARS. It’s a nonprofit organization designed to encourage youngsters to participate in the arts. Her 18-year-old twins have competed in national vocal events in Branson, Missouri. They now serve as instructors at the music school in Ripley.Kurt Schultis was busy helping Wanda Butts pastor at Goose Creek Baptist Church in Ritchie County, perfect a hymn.“ …
