Public meetings planned for new state parks

Public meetings are planned in early December to help determine what happens next for three state parks in southern Missouri.The parks were announced nearly a year ago, in the final weeks of Gov. Jay Nixon’s administration, but have remained closed. At least one environmental organization is concerned that the state may attempt to sell the properties, none of which have been developed, but another group isn’t convinced that is the plan.The Missouri Department of Natural Resources last week said it would hold public meetings “to discuss the future of three state park properties” — Ozark Mountain, Bryant Creek and Jay Nixon state parks. The public also will be able to weigh in on the parks with comments that will be collected Dec. 4 through 15 by going to mostateparks.com.

• Ozark Mountain State Park contains 1,011 acres in Taney County, northwest of Branson along Missouri Highway 465, protecting features known as knobs. The public meeting will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, Dec. 4, at the Dewey Short Visitor Center, 4500 State Highway 165, in Branson.• Bryant Creek State Park includes 2,917 acres of oak and pine forests and nearly 2 miles of Bryant Creek. The park is in Douglas County, 22 miles southeast of Ava. The public meeting will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 5, at the Ava Community Center, 108 Northeast 2nd Ave., in Ava.• Jay Nixon State Park, with 1,200 acres adjacent to Taum Sauk State Park in Reynolds County, was named for the Democratic governor. It is a backcountry site with no access other than the Ozark Trail. That public meeting will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 7, at nearby Johnson’s Shut-Ins State Park, 148 Taum Sauk Trail, in Middlebrook.Ozark Mountain and Bryant Creek were announced in December, along with Eleven Point State Park, which is 4,167 acres that includes 6 miles of frontage …
