Raising Twain: Kilmer to introduce film showing in Branson (UPDATE: Show canceled)

Val Kilmer has performed countless times in front of cameras for movies and TV shows, including legendary roles as Doc Holliday in “Tombstone” and Jim Morrison in “The Doors.” But when performing something close to stand-up comedy, that’s when he felt the most alive, he said.“Comedy is life,” Kilmer said. “That’s why all the phraseology about it is about death. ‘I killed ‘em tonight!’ ‘Really murdered ‘em!’”Kilmer found himself having to learn stand-up chops in preparation for a role that has become a passion project: Portraying Missouri-born author Mark Twain. He takes on the role in “Cinema Twain,” a one-man play presented in a film.
The film will be presented Saturday at The Mansion Theatre in Branson. Kilmer will introduce the film for the audience at the beginning, then answer questions from the audience afterward.Kilmer developed the show as a one-man play and performed it for live audiences over the last decade. The play features Twain speaking to an audience, much as the actual author did during his day, Kilmer said.Thus the connection with stand-up comedy: Kilmer said Twain arguably created the form of entertainment with his famous speaking engagements. So he pursued tips and advice from comedic actors such as Dave Chapelle and Will Forte so he could hone in how Twain would speak.Kilmer said his love for Twain was rooted in stories from his father.“My dad would tell us stories. Then when I got older, I read some Mark Twain stories and discovered what a shameless plagiarist my father was,” Kilmer said, laughing. “He told us he made all these stories up, but maybe half of them sure were Mark Twain.”Twain isn’t the only historical figure with a prominent role in “Cinema Twain,” however: It also involves Mary …
