Robles talks of ‘reaching the mountaintop’
BRANSON MO NEWS: As Anthony Robles moved around the stage at Chateau on the Lake on Thursday night at the South Central Missouri FCA Christian Athlete and Coach of the Year Banquet, he had a stranglehold on the attention of the capacity crowd.Robles told his story of being born with one leg, of overcoming personal obstacles and the doubts of others, to become an unlikely wrestling champion, winning the 125-pound national title for Arizona State in the 2010-11 season.His inspirational message was met with a sustained standing ovation, as he talked at length about making it through the low points of his wrestling career, ending at the highest point in his sport.
“We all have challenges, we all have something that we have to overcome, something we have to wrestle with,” Robles said in a pre-banquet media session. “That doesn’t have to prevent you from reaching your dreams, from grinding out and reaching the mountaintop.“That’s the message I like to share, believe in your God-given abilities and that there is a plan for everyone. You have to keep the faith and be willing to fight through the tough times.”Robles freely talked about all the skeptics he encountered on his journey as an athlete, starting when he decided at age 14 he would be a wrestler. He came home after his first experience with the sport, bloodied and bruised, and had to convince his mother this was the sport for him.As a one-legged wrestler, he had a lifetime of convincing ahead of him, with coaches, fellow athletes, and finally – even as a two-time high school state champion and a high school All-American – college coaches and recruiters.His top two college choices were Oklahoma State and Iowa, home of powerhouse wrestling programs.
