Silver Dollar City prepares to debut “Time Traveler” roller coaster

BRANSON MO NEWS: Its scenic location and innovative design are about to rock the roller coaster world as Silver Dollar City prepares to open “Time Traveler” in the spring.
It’s not the tallest in the world nor the fastest, but the German-designed coaster has enough innovations in launching, twisting, turning and falling to make any roller coaster fan snap to attention.
The secret to “what’s going on behind those trees” at the 57-year-old Branson, Missouri, theme park was unveiled on National Roller Coaster Day, Aug. 16, with more mystery than an election night watch party. The two-year-old project, already one-third complete, had caused so much speculation about the secret construction project hidden by deep woods and the Ozark Mountains that management decided to throw a party to display their wares and announce the $26 million super coaster that will debut early next year.
“It’s fast,” said Brad Thomas, president of Silver Dollar City Attractions. “Its top speed is 50.3 miles per hour.”
“It’s steep,” said Germany’s Mack Rides engineer, Dennis Gordt. It features a 10-story vertical drop right out of the launch house. At the “reveal event,” guests and employees had a preview of the launch house and were reluctant to stand on a glass bottom “selfie” platform that was constructed at the top of the 90-foot drop.
And it’s costly. The price for the Mack Rides design and construction is more than double any previous attraction at the park. In fact, it accounts for more than half of the Silver Dollar City’s last five-year cumulatively investment of over $50 million, according to Thomas.
“This ride is very innovative,” Gordt said. “There is no ride in the world that has spinning cars, is doing vertical drops, goes upside down as much as here and also has a secondary launch. This is a world’s first.”
