The new Roseanne is a pale, sad imitation of the original

When Roseanne arrived in 1988, it was fresh, bold and funny as hell. A blast of fresh proletariat air in the staid climate of the American sitcom, it was grounded in a working-class reality that few comedies before it had dared to inhabit, and it infused the familiar form of the domestic sitcom with an observational cynicism that was wonderful to behold. After eight years of great comedy plus a final season that ranks as one of the worst abominations ever put to air in the history of the medium, Roseanne Barr rode triumphantly away to become progressively more unhinged, her place as the creator of one of the most beloved sitcoms of all nevertheless secure.Why she has now decided to bring the show back is anyone’s guess. The new Roseanne lacks any obvious reason to exist beyond providing work for supporting players fallen on hard times. Its return seems founded purely on the very 2018 notion that what viewers want above all is a reminder that things they liked when they were younger exist. As more and more old shows haul themselves out of the crypt, the televisual landscape increasingly resembles the show the Simpsons visited in Branson, Missouri: “That’s Familiar!” Of course, The Simpsons itself now mainly plays to the same impulse, but that’s another story.Viewers of the new Roseanne can be forgiven for first feeling uneasy at the first sight of the name Whitney Cummings, the “mind” responsible for 2 Broke Girls, listed as executive producer.
