US roller coaster parks that are fit for a king

It’s no secret that my husband and I are roller coaster fans. While other people are basking on the beach in Hawaii, we’re getting our kicks on a cobra roll at 70 mph.Other coaster fans seem few and far between. Few of our closest friends will ride them, and among the couples, it’s usually only the woman who will venture onto the ride. They usually say they’re afraid the train will leave the tracks, or bump into another trainload of people. Chris likes to say that amusement and theme parks aren’t in the business of killing people, or they wouldn’t be in business.Although coaster designers and diehard fans have different categories for coasters, I start with only two: the rough and the smooth. We’re getting on in our years now, which means some of the rougher ones are now off the menu. Two in particular were the Texas Giant, at Six Flags Over Texas, and Mean Streak, at Cedar Point in Sandusky, Ohio. They have since evolved into “hybrid coasters,” but when they first opened, I could feel my brain rattling around in my skull.
Seriously, the two basic types of coasters are the woodie and the steel. Steel coasters are far smoother than woodies. Folks around these parts might remember Zingo in Tulsa; that was a smallish woodie, with traditional flat tracks. Steel coasters have tubular tracks, and the hybrids – which look like woodies but ride like their steel cousins – have a special kind of flat track that allows inversions and other features formerly known only to the steel track variety.The most familiar woodie, like Zingo, is called an “out and back.” The coaster starts at the station, climbs a hill, takes a dip, then usually another big hill, before it makes a turn and …
