Weathers’ kick return TD ignites Webb City in win at Branson

Trailing in the second quarter on Friday night at Branson’s Pirate Stadium, the Webb City Cardinals needed a spark.Devrin Weathers definitely provided one.A speedy 6-foot-1, 175-pound sophomore, Weathers ignited the Cardinals with a 99-yard kick return for a touchdown in a game Webb City eventually won 22-20.
“It gave us a little boost,” Webb City coach John Roderique said of the play. “We really needed the points at that point.”Ranked first in Class 4 by the Missouri Media, Webb City improved to 4-0 with the road victory.It wasn’t easy.Webb City’s first offensive possession ended with a turnover on downs and the second series saw the Cardinals punt after a quick three and out. When the first quarter ended, the game was scoreless.It was a sharp contrast to the previous two weeks that saw the defending state champion Cardinals score two first-quarter touchdowns against both Neosho and Joplin.Justice Webber made a 29-yard field goal to give fired-up Branson a 3-0 advantage with 9:07 left in the first half.However, the Pirates wouldn’t have the lead or the momentum for long.Standing just outside of the end zone, Weathers hauled in the ensuing kick on the right side of the field and took off.In a highlight reel play, Weathers made a cut or two in the middle of the field and then sprinted up the left sideline all the way to the house.“I caught it and I saw that there was a wide open gap down the middle and I took it,” Weathers said. “It felt good. We needed it.”Once again showing off his speed from the running back position, Weathers later added a key 54-yard touchdown.Weathers compiled 329 all-purpose yards against Branson, with 175 rushing and 154 on kick returns.
