BRANSON MO NEWS: Former U.S. Attorney General John Ashcroft wants Buchanan County Commissioner Harry Roberts’ secrets for balancing a budget.On Thursday, Ashcroft hit the campaign trail with Roberts — who is seeking a seat in the Missouri Senate in the 34th district — and made their final stop in St. Joseph at Room 108, located at 722 Felix St.In a jovial moment, Ashcroft described when he first served in the U.S. Senate the federal government had a debt of $11 trillion, but when he left office that debt had increased to $21 trillion. Ashcroft noted when Roberts took office as a county commissioner, the county had a debt of a couple million dollars, but now the county has zero debt.
“If there any chance you could share your debt reduction secrets with the people of Washington?” Ashcroft said.Ashcroft also said it’s important that those who attended the event not only support Roberts during the election but also if he wins the seat.“Politics is a team sport. It’s not something that can be achieved by any individual. And very frankly, government is the same thing,” Ashcroft said. “It’s not something that can be done alone.”Roberts didn’t have any comment on the current scandals plaguing the Missouri Governor’s Office, but Ashcroft said it’s important to let the judicial process to move forward.During his time as Missouri governor, Ashcroft took a hard stance against crime. From 1985 to 1992, the amount of law enforcement officers in the state increased by 62 percent. From 1985 to 1993, the capacity of Missouri’s prisons increased from 9,071 to 15,630.
