‘All Hands on Deck!’ musical is a fundraiser for homeless veterans

The phrase, “All Hands on Deck!” is a traditional call for help.Since 2011, it has also become known as the title of a touring patriotic 1940s musical extravaganza which has been performed in Branson, Missouri, since 2016.On March 31, “All Hands on Deck!” will be at the Lea Ledger Stadium at Copperas Cove High School for a 2 p.m. performance to aid Operation Stand Down Central Texas in helping local homeless veterans.
The family-friendly production is a USO-style show filled with songs and comedy skits, accompanied by the nine-piece Hollywood Victory Caravan Orchestra.“This show is a wonderful patriot experience that will make you feel so proud to be an American,” said Joann Courtland, director of​ Operation Stand Down Central Texas.Besides plenty of entertainment, the show is a major fundraiser for the nonprofit.Proceeds benefit support services to homeless veterans and their families in Coryell, Bell and Lampasas counties.“OSDCT does not get grants but is funded only by private donations, so this show has the potential to expand our current programs and help so many more veterans,” Courtland said.Last year’s show at the Temple Cultural Activities Center allowed OSDCT to donate $3,000 to the Veteran Internment Fund managed through the Korean War Veterans of Texas.Bringing the show from Missouri to Copperas Cove is costly, so sponsors are still urgently needed.Sponsorship levels range from $100 to $1,000 and each sponsor’s name is included on the program listing, on a banner in the lobby and on the OSDCT website.According to EndHomelessness.org, an estimated 40,000 veterans were homeless in the U.S. in 2017.Courtland said people in Central Texas may not realize how serious homelessness is, with more than 500 homeless individuals in Bell and Coryell Counties.“About 31 percent of those are veterans,” she said.Operation Stand Down has chapters …
