BRANSON MO NEWS: An estimated 500,000-600,000 Oklahomans will be traveling during this upcoming Fourth of July holiday week, based on past Triple A numbers, said Mark Madeja, public affairs manager with AAA Oklahoma.
And some of those travelers will be heading to Bartlesville for several events, including the Glen Winget Memorial Baseball Tournament, the Frank Phillips Home and Freedom Fest, said Maria Gus, executive director at Bartlesville Convention and Visitors Bureau.
Last year, the Glen Winget Memorial Baseball Tournament attracted about 2,500 people, said Gus. Their spending produced around $32,000 in sales tax and about $6,800 in lodging tax, she said.
People from across Oklahoma, Kansas, Arkansas and Missouri will be coming for the tournament this year, Gus said.
Freedom Fest is sure to draw visitors as well, said Gus. Last year, it had an attendance of an estimated 3,000 people.
For the first time on Fourth of July, the Frank Phillips Home will be open for tours — with its last tour ending at 3 p.m.
The Dewey and Copan firework shows could attract people as well, said Gus.
“By having events and tracking the amount of people that are coming, we know these types of events make an impact,” Gus said. “That helps all of us.”
The more people come and spend money, the more tax money will be available to the community for things it needs, she said.
For the people traveling away from Bartlesville, some of them are concerned gas prices will affect their traveling — including Bill Thompson who is going to the lake with his family, he said.
“Fifty bucks for 16 gallons, that kinda hurts. Pulling a camper I only get about 10 miles to a gallon, it makes a difference,” Thompson said. “You don’t get to go very far.”
