It’s Labor Day and families gathered in southeast Iowa to celebrate the holiday. The annual parade brought people from Illinois, Iowa, and Missouri to downtown Keokuk and it continues to gain community support. Main street in Keokuk saw thousands packed the street to watch the parade and people of all ages said it was a great morning to visit old friends and celebrate the community’s hard work.From law enforcement to high school bands, the annual Keokuk Labor Day Parade creates a lot of noise in the community. “I think it’s great,” Steve Land said. “I think it’s great for the community that everyone gets to come out. It’s nice to see the kids out here.” Unlike any other parade, this one sees a lot of people from Illinois and Missouri participate.Julie Payne traveled all the way from Branson, Missouri to watch her grandson walk in the parade with his church group, something she will cherish for a long time. “It means everything,” Payne said. “I think that’s what makes a good city and a good community is when they come together to support a common goal.” Veterans and law enforcement were honored.Keokuk is a blue collar town and the local unions and manufacturing companies were getting loud cheers from the crowd for their hard work everyday.”Just seeing everyone so happy,” Jordan Sisk said. “Kids getting their candy and it’s fun to watch them run out and have a good time. ” While candy was a priority, kids said the parade was more than that.”Being able to see my friends and talking is great,” Colten Johnson said.
