Blunt, McCaskill and Hawley join chorus of politicians condemning Roy Moore

WASHINGTON • Missouri’s Republican U.S. senator joined a growing list of those distancing themselves from embattled GOP Senate candidate Roy Moore of Alabama.“The women have a more credible story than Judge Moore,” U.S. Sen. Roy Blunt, R-Mo., said in a statement Monday. “Alabama voters should have a better choice, and Judge Moore should have better answers to these charges.”Blunt backed out of appearing at a fundraiser for Moore scheduled for Friday in Albertville, Ala., NBC news reported.
The Washington Post reported last week that Moore pursued four women romantically when they were teenagers and he was in his early 30s. A fifth woman emerged Monday saying Moore also assaulted her in a locked car when she was 16.On Thursday, Moore called the allegations “fake news,” but on Friday did not outright deny dating teenagers when he was in his 30s. U.S. Sen. Claire McCaskill, D-Mo., noted what she said were Moore’s “shifting stories” in a statement calling for him to step aside.“As an experienced prosecutor in sexual assault cases, I believe these women, and I believe Roy Moore has damaged his credibility with shifting stories,” McCaskill said in a statement Monday morning. “He is not fit to serve in the Senate and he should step aside immediately.”Missouri Attorney General Josh Hawley, a Republican who is seeking to unseat McCaskill next year, did not go that far. He described the allegations as “serious” and “criminal,” but said he agreed with President Donald Trump, who said last week that Moore should be able to defend himself.“The judge certainly has the right to defend himself,” Hawley said at a press conference on Monday morning, “and to come forward with what he believes are the facts.
