BRANSON MO NEWS: One of the featured speakers at the Missouri Press Association’s 150th convention over the weekend was the governor of Missouri.
Jay Nixon was first elected as governor in 2008 and was re-elected in 2012.
Among the many topics Nixon talked about during his speech at Chateau on the Lake in Branson, some involved journalism ethics, fiscal discipline and healthcare.
Nixon said he reads multiple newspapers everyday.
“Sometimes it gives me a little heartburn when I read an unflattering headline or editorial; that comes with the job,” Nixon said.
“No one needs to tell me about the essential role of the press pushing, prodding and now and then even praising the work of our government to accomplish great things in our communities,” Nixon said.
An example, Nixon said, was in St. Louis when the St. Louis Post-Dispatch advocated for the $1.75 billion headquarters of National Geospacial Agency.
“A project that will keep thousands of jobs in Missouri and bring desperately needed investment,” Nixon said.
Another example came from the Joplin Globe after the EF-5 tornado in 2011.
