It turns out the MINK League will field only eight teams after all. For now.After league officials informally voted in Jefferson City in September, it appeared the summer collegiate baseball league would be expanding to nine teams and there may be an unbalance in the North and South Divisions.But, along with officially announcing Jefferson City as a league member at this weekend’s annual meetings in St. Joseph, Missouri, it was also made known that the Branson Nationals will not be fielding a team this upcoming summer.
In a press release dated Oct. 21 on the St. Joseph Mustangs website, the Branson team, which played its games at Southwest Baptist University in Bolivar, is suspending play as the organization “addresses the possibility of options for new ownership in upcoming seasons.” The league added its first team in Jefferson City since they accepted the Nationals’ organization in 2014. MINK Commissioner Bob Steinkamp said on Monday afternoon he could see a Nationals’ return as a possibility in 2017, but likely under new ownership.”They’re definitely not going to be in there as the Branson Nationals as we’ve known them the past couple years,” Steinkamp said. “We need to do background work …
