Branson softball finding offensive punch

BRANSON MO NEWS: As the Branson High School softball program draws closer to the postseason in its first season under coach Josh McKee, there’s a sense of calm that has come over the program.The Pirates weathered a disastrous week that saw them play four of the toughest teams in southwest Missouri, losing all four but being competitive throughout.That was part of a five-game losing streak.

In the aftermath of that, the coaches hit something of a reset button on the season.“We came back and as a coaching staff talked about what we needed to do,” McKee said. “We started making things more simple. Every team is different, and we can give this group a little more freedom. They can be more relaxed at the beginning of games and still be mentally locked in. “I think right now they are feeling confident about their play and have a little bit of a swagger about them.”The reset on the season clearly helped. Since that five-game losing skid, Branson has won five of seven games to even its record at 11-11. That includes winning three of five games at the Springfield Tournament on Saturday, after a 9-5 home victory over Carl Junction on Thursday.Branson spotted Carl Junction leads of 1-0 and 4-1, but scored the game’s final four runs to win going away.Emily Adams belted a solo home run over the left-field fence to put Branson on top in the fifth inning, then added three insurance runs in the seventh.Aly Smethers singled to lead off the seventh and Amber Large walked. Smethers scored when Molly Hagston reached on an error. Faith Fleming singled with two outs to drive in a run, and Hagston scored on a throwing error.That was enough to back the pitching of junior …
