Ceremony to honor 2018 finalists, winner of Annie Baxter Award

Finalists for the 2018 Annie Baxter Award will be honored and the recipient announced during a ceremony set for noon Wednesday in the North End Zone Facility at Missouri Southern State University.A panel of judges reviewed nominations for this year’s award and selected the following finalists:• Stephanie Brady, executive director of the Community Clinic of Southwest Missouri.
• Gayle Crane, circuit court judge for Jasper County since 2006.• Marilyn Ruestman, presiding commissioner of Newton County and former state representative.• Alison Malinowski Sunday, executive director of the Lafayette House.Established in 1990, the award is presented annually to a prominent Missouri woman who makes noticeable contributions to her community in the spirit of Annie Baxter. Baxter was elected Jasper County clerk in 1890. She was the first woman to hold elective office in Missouri and the first female county clerk in the United States.After a hiatus that began in 2005, the recognition was re-established in 2017, with the award going to Stephanie Theis, founder and director of Children’s Haven of Southwest Missouri.The master of ceremonies for Wednesday’s event will be Nicole Shoaf, assistant professor of political science at MSSU. Megan Bever, assistant professor of history, will give a presentation on the legacy of Annie Baxter, and MSSU President Alan Marble also will offer remarks.In addition to Theis, previous Annie Baxter Award recipients are:• 1990: Marjorie Bull, Jasper County clerk.• 1991: Joy Thompson, Joplin city clerk.• 1992: Harriet Woods, former Missouri lieutenant governor.

• 1993: Karen McCarthy, member of Missouri House of Representatives.• 1994: Cheryl A. Dandridge, former Joplin mayor.• 1995: Raeanne Presley, Branson businesswoman.

• 1996: Susan Redden, Joplin Globe reporter.• 1997: Charlene Betebener, area town clerk.• 1998: JoAnn Freeborn, former executive director of Area Agency on Aging.• 1999: Coralee Patrick, clerk and finance director for city of Nixa.• 2000: Mary Strickrodt, president of Aurora Historical Society.• 2001: Donna McQuay, mayor of Ozark.• 2002: Shawna Flannery, parks and …
