BRANSON MO NEWS: Branson received an award for recycling efforts in 2016, among its other sustainable accomplishments, according to the city’s environmental specialist.
Mona Menezes, environmental specialist, announced during her annual report at a recent aldermen meeting that Branson was named “Outstanding Recycling Collections System 2016” by the Missouri Recycling Center. The city won the award due to the 900 tons of glass that have been recycled since 2012. Recycling overall has increased 19.3 percent since 2007, Menezes said.
Menezes highlighted sustainability efforts within city departments. The Parks and Recreation Department has replaced a scorekeeper stand at the RecPlex. The new scorekeeper stand is made out of recycled plastic and sawdust, which will last 25 years and require not as much upkeep as the previous one, according to Menezes.
The Parks Department has also been installing recycled plastic and sawdust benches and picnic tables.
“They are very nearly indestructible. They’re also so heavy that no one can pick them up and throw them into Lake Taneycomo as has happened in the past,” Menezes said.
For the downtown project, Menezes said 20 recycle bins will be installed. Additionally, the downtown benches and light poles are made of 90 percent recycled plastic.
