Before Branson, Mo., became a vacation destination for visitors from around the planet, Dick’s 5 & 10 was busy attracting tourists that came to camp, catch a few bass or crappie at beautiful Table Rock Lake and revel in Ozark hospitality.Today, those warm and friendly locals are still there and are joined by headliners that fill 57,000 theater seats along with award-winning chefs that provide memorable dining opportunities.In Historic Downtown Branson, there’s a good chance to meet Steve Hartley and his brother-in-law, Dave Montgomery, who own and manage today’s Dick’s 5 & 10. The 5 & 10 is not much different now as when Hartley’s dad turned the key in 1961.
“Since my dad first open the doors, our family has been devoted to making shopping fun, of mixing nostalgia with novelty, ” Hartley said.”We see grandpas in the store and can spot the nostalgia in their faces. Memories for dads of being a kid and for his kids? All the fun of superheroes to whacky souvenirs and the greatest candy selection anywhere,” Hartley said.Thankfully, each aisle has a theme, or getting around the 10,000-square-foot store would be a challenge.
