Springfield High School had not one but two American Visions Award silver medalists this year. Ellie Krehbiel, a freshman, and Valentine Le Vot, a senior, both won silver medals. There were more than 3,000 silver medal winners in the national art awards program this year. Ellie’s piece called “The Trio” depicts her and her two older brothers sitting on a wall on a family trip to Branson, Missouri. The drawing is based on a photo taken when Ellie was little. “The picture is telling that family’s story,” said Cindy Huffman, the head of Springfield’s art department and Ellie and Valentine’s art teacher. “It shows a certain sort of innocence that I think a lot of people want right now.” This piece is one of Ellie’s first attempts at drawing people. Ellie usually draws nature scenes or animals. She always uses a reference photo, but it is usually a picture she has taken on a family vacation. That does not mean all Ellie does is recreate vacation photos. Ellie often messes with different colors that aren’t traditionally seen in that setting. A piece she is working on now includes horses, and some of the colors used are unexpected. The spots on the horses are purple instead of white or brown. It almost looks like a bubble floating across the horse’s back. “It is another perspective on the trip we went on,” said Ellie. “I think because I do realistic art I like to have a reference.” Valentine is a French exchange student who took art for the first time this year because she was unable to take classes at her school in France. She learned English in her art classes. Valentine spoke some English before she arrived in August but …
