BRANSON MO NEWS: Dru Smith, a 6-foot-3 transfer guard from Evansville, made his commitment official Tuesday when he signed with Missouri.Smith committed Friday after taking an official visit and will sit out for one year due to NCAA eligibility rules. The Evansville, Indiana, guard will be available at the start of the 2019-20 season and will have two years of eligibility remaining. The Tigers offered Smith on April 4. He was also considering Virginia Tech and Xavier.
Averaging 13.7 points and 4.6 assists per game, Smith helped lead Evansville to a 17-15 record during the 2017-18 season.Missouri fans are hoping the junior’s passing prowess and shot selection will make an offensive impact for the Tigers. He knocked down 48 percent of his 3-pointers and more than 57 percent of his field goals last season.Smith’s impact could be dependent on his health. In his two years at Evansville, the guard battled foot and leg injuries that kept him out for weeks at a time.

The commitment marks Missouri’s fifth in its 2018 class, with Smith joining fellow transfers Mark Smith (Illinois) and K.J. Santos (Illinois-Chicago; eligible immediately after not playing last season) and incoming freshmen Torrence Watson (Whitfield High School in Creve Coeur), Xavier Pinson (Simeon Career Academy in Chicago) and Javon Pickett (Belleville East High School in Illinois). If freshman forward Jontay Porter keeps his name in the NBA Draft — a likely outcome, according to multiple reports — the Tigers will have one scholarship remaining for next year’s roster.
