Family gives shoes to entire school

WEIR — Thursday afternoon 167 pairs of power shoes were delivered by the Wayne Kennedy family to students at Southeast Elementary School in Weir.

While they were labeled with common names such as FILA, Nike, Reebok and Sketchers, the new tennis shoes, in all size and colors, had the amazing power to make students smile, in addition to running faster, jumping higher and making them “a lot taller.”

The last four years, Wayne Kennedy and his wife, Bette, with the help of their children and grandchildren, have purchased and delivered shoes for every student in the school.

Mr. Kennedy and his wife grew up in the area, and he graduated from Weir High School in 1955.

School secretary Stephanie Smith-Combs said Mrs. Kennedy called the school about four years ago asking how they could help. Around 60 percent of the students qualify for free and reduced lunches, which is about average for students in Southeast Kansas schools.

“Bette called the school several years ago to see what the needs were. They said they had all the school supplies they needed, but they came up with the idea of shoes because kids wear them out every year. It was a good idea for something …
