Financial aid information for trade school should be available to parentsThe St. Joseph News-Press was so close to writing an informational editorial, but not quite hitting the mark. The “Our opinion” of Oct 5 titled “Change industry’s image” does refer to various studies that state 80 percent of young people
are more interested in manufacturing careers after attending a career-exploration event. I agree with that statement. I do not agree that students who are informed of various careers in technology will pursue that career unless there is funding available to attend a one- to two-year technical school. The editorial staff must realize that not all graduating seniors do not have the needed financial resources to pay for further education. Parents of these students also should be your target population for vocational and technical career awareness.Parents should have information about area schools that provide technical education. Parents should become informed consumers as to the cost of attending a school and the available financial resources. I can assure you that a parent who is sending his child to a four-year state university has been provided that information. So as you plan the next National Manufacturing Day, tell the sponsors that the nine business firms should be joined by representatives from every technical and vocational college in the four-state area.
