BRANSON MO NEWS: FORSYTH — Up until a couple weeks ago, Dawson Deroo’s highlight at Forsyth was a game-winning putback he made in a jayvee game versus Clever last winter.
“I shot a free throw, missed it and was feeling bad,” he said. “But I grabbed the rebound and shot. It hit the backboard and went in. My buddy Brandon Coker picked me up and put me on his shoulders. I was so tiny back then they all could lift me above their head.”
A growth spurt over the spring and summer has Deroo seeing eye to eye with most of his classmates and teammates. He grew four inches and now stands 5-10.
Football coach Tommie Anderson took notice and two weeks into Forsyth’s season moved Deroo from wide receiver to quarterback. With Deroo teaming up with wide receivers Anthony Stanford and Micaiah Rocha, the Panthers are putting up big numbers.
Deroo threw for 311 yards and three touchdowns in last week’s 48-33 win over Diamond. Rocha had eight catches for 174 yards and Stanford had five receptions for 137 yards.
Deroo, a junior, suddenly has gone from not playing at QB since he was in the seventh grade to having two of the most exciting receivers on the Class 3 scene in southwest Missouri to throw to.
“All I’ve got to do is throw bubbles to Anthony and Micaiah and they go 70 yards,” Deroo said. “I’m enjoying this. My dad has been telling me for years I should be at quarterback, so he’s been saying, ‘I told you so’ and all my brothers have been making jokes about me being a star quarterback.
