BRANSON MO NEWS: KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Across the country, gas prices this Memorial Day weekend are around 60 cents more than they were last year. The good news is they may be going down soon.Gas analysts say prices are higher now because of political issues, problems at the state department and declining production in Venezuela.

“The traffic is bad, and the prices are high,” Karl Lennox, who went from Kansas City, Missouri to Branson, said. Lennox said gas in the tourist hotspot was nearly a dollar more than in KC. “They’ve got a way of raising the prices and getting what they want,” he said. GasBuddy ranks Kansas and Missouri as two of the nation’s top 10 cheapest gas states, but prices are higher here, too. “It’s any wonder that demand may actually slump a little bit,” Dan McTeague, a senior petroleum analyst for GasBuddy.com said. McTeague adds that even in cheap states, the city matters. There are big, big differences, not obviously just because of taxes, but just competition among many retailers,” he said. Heather Parker and her kids stopped in Kansas City going from Denver to Chicago. “I pretty much have a set town that I stop in every time,” she said. Parker said prices aren’t as important as what’s inside the gas station. “I have to take my kids in and everything and I would much prefer a clean bathroom to three cents,” she said. McTeague said the trends make it seem like prices could still drop before the Fourth of July. “I wouldn’t celebrate it just yet, or open the champagne bottles just yet,” McTeague said. “But I think there’s a likelihood that prices will taper off for a little bit.” Missouri and Kansas rank 7th and 9th respectively for cheapest gas according GasBuddy.
