Looking to step into his first role as a head coach, Jon Herbig wanted to find the right fit.The 30-year-old found it with the Brescia University baseball team.Herbig was announced as the Bearcats’ new coach this week, taking over a program that will bring in 38 newcomers for the 2019 season.
“I’m ecstatic,” Herbig said Friday, “just absolutely thrilled for this opportunity. It’s a huge blessing for myself and my wife, we’re both excited about it.”This is my first head coaching job, so that’s extremely exciting to get my foot in the door with that and have the opportunity to build a program and coach a Brescia team that has a lot going for it.”Though Brescia is coming off a 12-33 effort in 2018, as well as two coaching changes within the last year, Herbig sees plenty of positivity moving forward.”There’s a lot going on with the university that I think is phenomenal,” he said. “This year was the largest-ever freshman class, it set a record for Brescia. The baseball team has done some things, as far as resources go, to give the head coach a good chance for success.”There’s so much going in the right direction.”Herbig comes to Owensboro following an assistant coaching stint at Central Christian College in Kansas and as a hitting coach in 2017 at Rio Grande — a fellow member of the River States Conference with Brescia. He’s also been a coach at the Sho-Me Baseball Camp in Branson, Missouri, since 2007.The Montana native grew up playing American Legion baseball, because there wasn’t any high school baseball available.”We had to play in the summers,” he said. “There was a coach that took me under his wing, Jay Ward.
