Sunday’s high temperature of 93 degrees as measured at the Springfield-Branson National Airport set a new daily record for the city, said Dave Gaede, a local science and operations officer with the National Weather Service. The previous highest temperature recorded in Springfield on a May 27 was 91 back in 2012, according to the weather service’s climate records. Though scattered storms were possible Sunday evening, the weather service forecast a high of 91 degrees and sunny for Monday, which is Memorial Day.The current record for May 28 is 90 degrees. This high-temperature mark was also set in what turned out to be a blistering 2012 for Springfield.Gaede said high temperatures for the rest of the week would be “pretty close” to existing records through May. However, the outlook for the next three months called for near-normal temperatures except the very southwest corner of Missouri near Joplin, Gaede said.He advised that people wear light-weight clothing, drink plenty of water and generally slow down when the mercury rises. “It’s just a matter of taking it easy when it gets real hot,” he said.
