Jazz Society aims to make NCWV ‘America’s Jazz Crossroads’

WESTON — Eric Spelsberg and his wife, Julia, used to have to travel to Washington, D.C., or New York City to hear jazz music.Then, his wife pushed him to do something about it.His love of jazz and inspiration for it, gained at the Mon Valley Tri-State Leadership Academy 20 years ago, prompted the Weston man a decade later to create the West Virginia Jazz Society.

“They called me up because they knew I was a community action director. I worked for multi-county agencies (in Marion, Taylor, Preston and Randolph counties), so they thought I’d be interested in multi-county aspects. I learned a lot about thinking on a regional level.”Now, Spelsberg and a board of five local officials (including Rosanne Policano, Scott Duarte, Bob Workman and Spelsberg’s wife), aim to make West Virginia a destination for music lovers — and for creating an “economic force.”“We have a simple mission actually: To identify and develop a market for live jazz music in West Virginia,” Spelsberg said.“I want this to become America’s jazz crossroads, just like Branson, Missouri is the Mecca of country music.
