JEFFERSON CITY • Chris Koster, the Democratic candidate for governor, said Tuesday he is canceling negotiations about a second debate until his Republican opponent releases his tax returns.Koster, who released income tax returns for 2012 through 2015 last week, is giving Republican Eric Greitens until Thursday to make detailed personal financial information public, saying it is an “absolute condition” of further debate talks.“Your campaign and Mr. Greitens have repeatedly accused your opponents of financial conflicts, improper tax behavior and lying. It is time for your candidate to live up to the standards of transparency he places upon everyone else,” Koster campaign chief Andrew Whalen wrote in a letter to Greitens campaign manager Austin Chambers.
Polls show Koster with a lead over Greitens in the run-up to the Nov. 8 election. Traditionally, front-runners are loathe to schedule debates on the premise that the forums only provide challengers more exposure.In a letter in response, Chambers said Koster’s ultimatum was an “excuse to hide from the people.””In the last debate, crooked career politician Chris Koster made a fool of himself, and now he’s running scared,” the letter noted.
